Open Access Commitment & Archival Consultation Rights
The ASSOCIATION POUR LA RESTAURATION ET L'ANIMATION CULTURELLE DE L'ABBAYE adheres to the principles of the Open Knowledge Commons. We assert that public heritage documentation created through public subsidies or voluntary civic labor must remain permanently and freely available to humanity. We apply Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC 4.0) licenses to all original research, photographs, architectural drawings, and educational worksheets generated by our teams.
Scholars, university students, and genealogy researchers wishing to consult our physical manuscript collection, nineteen-century restoration ledgers, and photographic glass plates are warmly invited to visit our research library at the Presbytery. Physical consultations are available every Thursday and Saturday by prior appointment. High-resolution archival scans and transcription aids are provided free of charge.
Through our ongoing digitization campaign, supported by regional cultural heritage grants, over 3,200 historical documents have been digitized to date. By placing these invaluable historical assets into the public hands, our association honors the intellectual legacy of the Order of Tiron and ensures that memory remains an open treasure for everyone.
Oral History Archives & Nave Acoustic Recordings
Preserving heritage encompasses not only carved stone and parchment, but also the intangible cultural memory of our regional community. Over the past decade, our oral history task force has recorded over eighty hours of biographical interviews with village elders, former stone quarry workers, bell ringers, and rural teachers from across Thiron-Gardais and the canton of Nogent-le-Rotrou.
These sound recordings recount local legends of Saint Bernard, twentieth-century restoration efforts, memories of the old parish schoolhouse, and traditional methods of harvesting Perche oak and thatch. Transcripts and curated audio excerpts are freely streamable through our listening terminals at the Presbytery and available for academic lending to regional ethnological research institutes.
Academic Citation & Image Reproduction Protocols
Scholars and educators referencing materials from the Abbey Archives should employ the standard archival citation formula: Association pour la Restauration et l'Animation Culturelle de l'Abbaye de Thiron-Gardais, Archival Collection [Record ID], Presbytère Historical Library. Reproductions for non-commercial educational publications, academic dissertations, and local cultural gazettes are authorized without royalty fees.
For high-resolution TIFF scans of nineteenth-century architectural elevations or glass negatives, researchers may submit a formal archival request to our secretariat. We prioritize prompt, helpful service to all students and historians who share our love for the heritage of the Perche.
Paper Preservation & Bookbinding Atelier
Within the historic walls of the Presbytery, our association operates a dedicated paper conservation and bookbinding atelier. Dedicated volunteer binders, trained by certified conservators from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, restore damaged historical parish registers, cartulary copies, and nineteenth-century municipal bulletins.
The workshop adheres strictly to reversible, acid-free archival standards. Degraded paper leaves are treated in deacidification wash baths, repaired with Japanese kozo tissue and wheat starch paste, and resewn onto linen cords using unbleached flax thread. Hand-marbled endpapers recreating historic Perche patterns are crafted directly on-site during public demonstration sessions.
Furthermore, our digital archive repository integrates OCR search capabilities, allowing students, genealogists, and historians worldwide to execute rapid keyword queries across hundreds of historical manuscripts, medieval charters, and restoration site photographs at zero licensing cost.
Through these tactile preservation practices, our volunteers ensure that historical records survive physical decay, safeguarding vital civic genealogies, architectural notes, and monastic accounts for upcoming centuries of academic inquiry.
